To find health should be the object of the physician. Anyone can find disease.
– Dr A.T. Still
Craniosacral Therapy began about 100 years ago when an osteopath (Dr William Sutherland) discovered that our whole body, including tissues and fluids, expand and contract in a rhythmic motion (called ‘primary respiration’). This movement of expansion and contraction – opening and closing – gives us a lot of information about the health of a person. When this movement is present and in full expression we have health, when it’s limited or obscured for any reasons problems may occur. For example we may start feeling pain, tightness or tension in our body.
Imagine a river, that is flowing easily in the riverbank with a certain strength and with no restrictions. Then over time some rocks fall into the river, some big, some small, some tree branches and leaves. The river keeps flowing but needs to adjust its course to accommodate what’s inside, so now it has less strength and is a bit restricted.
What we can do with craniosacral therapy is to look at these restrictions and at the same time connect with the river and the flow that is still there – and see how the river can be eased again, and the restrictions moved and eventually dissolved so that the river re-gains its strength.
Craniosacral Therapy is about listening deeply to what is happening in your body, supporting your body’s own capacity for healing and repair, and acknowledging the interconnectedness of mind, body, soul and spirit by working with the whole person. Healing happens at a deep level and it is not a quick fix.
